Understanding Florida Auto Insurance Requirements for 2026

Florida Auto Insurance Minimums

Florida law requires all registered vehicles to carry two types of coverage:

Personal Injury Protection (PIP): $10,000 minimum. PIP covers your medical expenses and lost wages regardless of who caused the accident. This is part of Florida's "no-fault" insurance system.

Property Damage Liability (PDL): $10,000 minimum. This pays for damage you cause to someone else's property, typically their vehicle.

What Florida Does Not Require (But You Probably Need)

Florida is one of the few states that does not require bodily injury liability (BIL) coverage. However, driving without it is a significant financial risk. If you cause an accident and someone is seriously injured, you could be personally liable for their medical bills, which can easily reach six or seven figures.

We strongly recommend carrying at least $100,000/$300,000 in bodily injury liability coverage. The cost difference between minimum coverage and adequate protection is often just a few dollars per month.

Other Coverage to Consider

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM): Protects you if you are hit by a driver with no insurance or not enough insurance. Florida has one of the highest uninsured motorist rates in the country.

Collision: Pays to repair or replace your vehicle after an accident, regardless of fault.

Comprehensive: Covers non-collision damage like theft, vandalism, hail, flooding, and hitting an animal.

How to Save on Auto Insurance in Florida

Bundle with your home insurance for a multi-policy discount. Ask about safe driver discounts, good student discounts, and low-mileage discounts. Compare rates across multiple carriers, as pricing varies significantly. Consider raising your deductible if you have savings to cover a higher out-of-pocket cost.
